Tuition
Tuition is the heart of what most services do, and it is the one thing with no screen of its own — it is spread across the places that each handle a part of it.
Why there is no Tuition screen
The Services menu groups its screens under a heading called Tuition, which is easy to read as a screen that is missing. It is not: the heading names the section, and tuition itself is set up and run from the screens below.
Where each part lives
| What you want to do | Where |
|---|---|
| Define what is taught, and where | Activity settings — activities, activity groups and their service types |
| Set what it costs | Finance settings — charges, remissions and discounts |
| See who is being taught | Business Management > Tuition — the Tuition List across the whole service |
| Deal with applications and funding | Business Management > Tuition — remission and subsidy requests, notes of interest |
| Approve what needs a decision | Tasks — withdrawals, modifications, declined offers |
How a pupil comes to be taught
An activity is a thing taught at a place: violin at St Mary's on a Tuesday, the beginners' brass group at the centre on Thursdays. It carries its venue, its teacher, when it runs, and what it costs.
Applications arrive from the Portal and wait to be dealt with. From there a pupil is offered a place and brought in; somebody who cannot be placed yet goes on the waiting list until a place exists.
It is the activity that generates the lessons in the diary, which is why the activity has to exist before anybody can be taught.
When things change
Transferring moves a pupil to a different activity — another school, another day, a different duration — and works out any credit due on the old one.
Withdrawing takes them out altogether, from a date.
Both leave the history intact: what happened before the change is still there and still correct.
